The Air Jordan 9 Low “Pantone” is not exactly one of the original colorways of the ninth Air Jordan model, but like OG iterations of the model, this iteration one draws its inspiration from the same source. The inspiration behind the upcoming retro Air Jordan 9 Low can be traced back to when Michael Jordan was still studying in the University of North Carolina and partaking in collegiate basketball as a part of the UNC Tar Heels. As for its “Pantone” nickname, it is likely that it has been dubbed so because it looks quite similar to the Air Jordan 11 “Pantone.”
In the not so distant past, the “Pantone” collection of sneakers included colorways of Air Jordan models between 1 and 23 that never ended up hitting the shelves. One thing all of those sneakers had in common is that their uppers were always dressed up in powder blue. Two years ago in 2014, the Air Jordan 11 “Pantone” ended up arriving at retailers as that year’s annual Holiday colorway of the eleventh Air Jordan silhouette, included in the “Gift of Flight” Pack. Living up to the Pantone tradition, this upcoming Air Jordan 9 Low certainly draws from and resembles its predecessors from the collection.
Instagram user @realchickenwop was the first to provide Jordanheads with a first close-up look at the Air Jordan 9 Low “Pantone.” More recently, @realchickenwop shared an entire batch of photos that showcase what the sneaker looks like in detail. It is obvious that the leather and suede uppers and even the laces are dressed up entirely in Carolina blue, which is also known as Pantone. White, namely in the form of the midsoles that feature a little Pantone-colored Jumpman and the “23 featured on the heel, contrasts with the tonal uppers. Black also makes an appearance over the inner lining, Jumpman globe logo on the heel and the tongue tag.
The Air Jordan 9 happens to be one of those models that Michael Jordan never rocked on the court, but it has been worn by other NBA athletes. So far it is nothing but a rumor, but apparently the Air Jordan 9 “Pantone” might hit the shelves on June 11th and will be available at a price of $170.
